What the course is about

Foundations of translation covers basic concepts of translation which are necessary for translation practice. This course also includes basic concepts of language and linguistics that are relevant for translation practice. By means of definitions, short explanations and simple examples, this course addresses and develops the answers to common questions in translation, such as:

• What concepts does a student of translation need to know?
• What does a practising translator need to know in order to operationalise, formalise and discuss their practice?
• What do language professionals need to know to understand translation as a form of cross-linguistic communication?

Who is this course for 

Foundations of translation is for language students who may want to know more about translation and for language teachers who may want to pivot into the translation profession. This course also aims at providing a solid foundation in translation for those candidates who wish to sit the CIOL Diploma in Translation.

In more specific terms, the course is for:

• undergraduate students enrolled in courses who have not had major exposure to translation studies and/or to theoretical concepts behind their practice
• bilinguals who may want to know more about translation
• language learners
• language teachers
• professionals in language related or linguistically involved fields who may wish to sit the Diploma in Translation

No specific level of proficiency is required for the course as such. However, in order to obtain a high score in a Diploma in Translation, candidates should have an advanced command of the language pairs they wish to sit the exam for.
